  • Sony has announced “NGVR” Next-generation PlayStation VR Headset

Sony has announced “NGVR” Next-generation PlayStation VR HeadsetSony is reportedly working on a new PSVR and hinted at a remarkable boost in performance, resolution, wider view, new controllers, and better tracking. Sony has now announced more specs of its upcoming new PlayStation VR headset at a developer’s summit. The YouTube channel PSVR Without Parole and UploadVR has provided some important information. The device is reportedly codenamed NGVR (next-gen VR) and features controllers with capacitive touch sensors. It can detect when you’re holding the controller or touching the buttons, and even sense the distance to your fingers. Sony also reportedly planning optional VR support for all AAA releases. You could play them either in VR or on your TV much like it did with Resident Evil 7 and No Man’s Sky on the PS4 and PS5.

PSVR Without Parole pointed out that the next-gen PSVR will offer a 110-degree field of view that’s 10 degrees wider than the PSVR. It will use flexible scaling resolution to make the most of those pixels. UploadVR said that the headset will feature high-resolution 2,000 x 2,040 OLED displays (4K in total). The PSVR will connect to PlayStation consoles with a single cable with no pass-through box required. It will also use inside-out tracking and offer adaptive triggers and haptic feedback on the controllers. The PSVR 2 should have featured mostly on par with rival headsets like the Oculus Quest 2 and HTC Vive Pro 2. However, Sony said that the headset won’t launch until at least next year. The PSVR 2 will work exclusively with the PlayStation 5.

Sony already has a VR solution on PS4 after all, and the added horsepower of the PS5 will be a key to making the most of the new hardware. Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan said that while PlayStation still believes in VR, we might not see a PSVR 2 headset for a couple of years. The PSVR 2 could launch much later than the console’s release date. PlayStation VR launched three years after the PS4. But the relative success of PSVR means that Sony is likely to expedite the process this time around. The latest PSVR 2 rumor is concerned with its release date, which sources suggest could be Christmas 2022.
