Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome to get New Important Security UpdatesSome tech news outlets have indicated that web browsers including Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome will get some important security support from Intel. Both browsers from Google and Microsoft will gain benefit from Intel CET (Control-flow Enforcement Technology) protection. It will support running devices powered by Intel’s 11th generation CPUs. The CET security feature avoids exploits from hijacking an application’s usual control-flow transfer instructions. It is a mechanism sometimes adopted by attackers to inject malicious code. Moreover, CET will also protect against ROP (Return Oriented Programming) and JOP (Jump Oriented Programming) attacks. A cloud solutions specialist at Microsoft, Baiju V Patel issued a statement.

Patel said, “JOP or ROP attacks can be particularly hard to detect or prevent because the attacker uses existing code running from executable memory in a creative way to change program behavior”. He also explained and added, “What makes it hard to detect or prevent ROP/JOP is the fact that an attacker uses existing code running from executable memory. Many software-based detection and prevention techniques have been developed and deployed with limited success”. However, only Chromium browsers running on devices with 11th generation Intel CPUs (released last year) will have access to this feature because Intel CET is a hardware-based security solution.

Point to be noted that Windows 10 users can check if their device is making use of Intel CET by activating Task Manager. Click on the “Details” tab and choose “Select Columns”. Individuals will be able to see which processes support the Intel CET feature by ticking “Hardware-enforced Stack Protection”. It is noteworthy that Hardware-enforced Stack Protection is the name of the implementation that Windows 10 devices use to support Intel CET. Your web browsers have to be increasingly careful against cyberattacks (with fake extensions), proving to be a popular method of infecting victims with malicious code. Moreover, Mozilla has also confirmed that it is exploring ways of adding support to its browser for Intel CET in Firefox.
