LG to present its Transparent OLED TVs at CES 2021 for Restaurants and Public Transit WindowsThe CES (Consumer Electronics Show) has been one of the largest technology events of the year. One of the big tech trends at CES 2021 might be transparent displays. LG is leading the charge with a showcase of its 55-inch transparent OLED technology as it could adjust in our everyday lives. Point to be noted that there are various companies making transparent LCD screens, but LG is still the only company manufacturing transparent OLED displays. The company claims that its OLED technology is superior with its panels achieving 40% transparency, while LCD only offers 10%. LG will show off its 55-inch bleeding-edge, transparent OLED displays in a number of ways during CES 2021. One of the displays will be used on a mock bedroom setup. Pushing a button on a Smart Bed will cause a 55-inch Transparent OLED display to rise up from within the bed’s frame.

LG’s CES-related events will highlight a number of real-world applications. Senior Vice President & Head of the Commercial Business Unit at LG Display, Jong-sun Park said, “Transparent OLED is a technology that maximizes the advantages of OLED and can be used in various places in our daily lives, from stores, shopping malls, and architectural interiors to autonomous vehicles, subway trains, and aircraft. It will grow into a next-generation display that can change the existing display paradigm”. There are cinematic speakers built into the frame as well, removing the need for additional surround speakers. The frame containing the display and speakers can be easily moved around the home. Point to be noted that CES 2021 runs from January 11-14. LG is pushing a clear consumer concept for its transparent displays. Two other scenarios LG will be showcasing at its virtual CES 2021 booth are both commercial settings.

The first is the idea of having a transparent OLED display at a restaurant. So, diners can view the menu and select their food via the screen, while still being able to see the restaurant behind. The other example is the replacement of a traditional subway window with a 55-inch transparent OLED display. It allows commuters to view maps and useful information on the screen while also being able to see through the display to the outside. LG claims its latest transparent OLED delivers clear image quality. But, there is currently no word on when this technology will actually be available for consumers to buy. We believe it will be exceedingly expensive when it does initially hit the market. It is noteworthy that Panasonic announced transparent TVs using LG’s panels in November 2020.
