Microsoft hasn’t yet released a new operating system Windows 11, but Windows 10 users can get a free update. Windows Insider Program members can now download the first Windows 11 Insider Preview build and test out some of its new features like widgets, virtual desktops, and the new Microsoft Store. Check out Microsoft’s site for specifications to see, if your current Windows 10 PC is capable of the free upgrade to Windows 11. If you buy a new PC between now and the general release, that computer will also be eligible for the free upgrade. Don’t worry if you haven’t yet updated to Windows 10. There is a perfect way to download Windows 10 for free. It is a good time to make the switch to prepare your machine for the Windows 11 upgrade.

Users can also sign up now for free if they are not members of the Windows Insider Program. They can now download the first Insider Preview build of Windows 11. Only use a tester device for the beta version but never download the beta on your primary device because it is buggy. It is noteworthy that this first build doesn’t include every new feature that will eventually arrive with the general release. Make sure you’re running a licensed version of Windows 10 on your device. Register to join the Windows Insider Program or sign in to your Windows Insider account. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Insider Program. Click Get Started. Select + to connect the Microsoft account you registered with and continue under Pick an account to get started.

Follow the instructions to choose the experience and channel you want to get Insider Preview builds through. Review the Privacy Statement and terms, and click confirm. Click Restart Now. After restarting, make sure your data settings are correct so you can download preview builds. Go to Settings > Privacy > Diagnostics & feedback to make sure the Optional Diagnostic Data switch is flipped to “On”. Then go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Click the Check for updates button. You should see the latest Insider Preview build based on the settings you selected. Your device should update the same way it would with any other Windows update, and you’ll be good to go. You will download it the same way you would with any new version of Windows once Windows 11 becomes available to all Windows users with compatible computers this fall.
