Some very interesting news related to the Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 tweeted from the Ice universe (@UniverseIce). The device opens and closes around the horizontal axis similar to the Motorola Razr. It will use an ultra-thin glass cover rather than the plastic screens that have been employed by other foldable devices. The screen on the Galaxy Fold 2 will look flatter with the perfectly designed cover material for foldable devices. Samsung reportedly agreed last month, to an exclusive long-term contract with DoInsys for its ultrathin glass sheets. It is important that LetsGo Digital discovered that Samsung had requested 3 trademarks with the EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office), earlier this month.
The reported 3 names were Samsung UTG, UTG, and Samsung Ultra-Thin Glass. The new device from Samsung is expected to be announced alongside the Galaxy S11 line during an event scheduled for February 18th. The sequel is designed to be a pocket-sized device until the time comes to use the phone, unlike the larger Galaxy Fold, which opens up along the vertical axis to announce a 7.3-inch tablet. Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 will open up to announce a 6.7-inch display with a punch-hole selfie camera. An external screen is reported to serve up notifications, information about incoming phone calls, time, date, and weather. The price for the new device of Samsung is expected at less than 1,000 U.S dollars. It offers a massive advantage over its main competitor the Motorola Razr.
It is noteworthy that the new Razr has a nostalgia factor that might help drive sales even if it is near twice the price of the Galaxy Fold 2. Pre-orders for the Razr were supposed to kick off this coming Friday and the device was set to be announced on 9th January. But, Motorola pushed back these dates last week for an unknown period of time. Motorola said that it needs more time to build enough phones due to the popularity of the foldable device. Samsung has reportedly improved the display and hinges to allow the Galaxy Fold 2 to close without a gap between the 2 sides. The device is expected to have the Snapdragon 865 Mobile Platform power with 12GB of memory, 256GB of storage, 2 separate (900mAh) batteries, and Samsung’s 45W fast charger.
